Protect Your Family

Avoid Direct Contact with Ticks

  • Stay away from wooded and brushy areas with high grass and leaf litter
  • Wear a long sleeved shirt, tucked in, and long pants tucked into socks when walking in forests and other wooded areas
  • Wear a hat and tuck your hair in when possible
  • Don’t walk barefoot or in open sandals except on pavement
  • Walk in the center of trails
  • Use repellents that contain 20-30% DEET on exposed skin and clothing

Make Your Yard Unappealing To Ticks

  • Remove All Leaf Litter
  • Mow regularly
  • Create a three foot barrier between your yard and wooded areas using wood chips or gravel
  • Discourage wildlife by building a fence and secure trash cans to keep away rodents that carry ticks

CHECK FOR TICKS FREQUENTLY

  • Remove a tick before it has a chance to transmit disease
  • Put your clothes in the dryer at a high temperature for 10-15 minutes to kill any live ticks
  • Shower or bathe right away to remove any unattached ticks
